SLC Tribune Article: Police Chase Suspect at High Speeds

from the Associated Press

A 31-year-old suspect led police on a 120-mile pursuit through central Utah that reached speeds of 130 mph Monday evening...

The Sevier County Sheriff's Office stopped a 2003 Nissan 350Z about 5 p.m. on Interstate 70 near Salina for not having license plates.

The driver pulled over, but once the sheriff's deputy approached the car, he sped away heading east.

After a 50-mile chase, the sheriff's deputies lost the vehicle, which was recently stolen out of California. They checked rest stops while members of the Utah Highway Patrol set up road spikes near Green River, said trooper Jason Haywood.

Sevier County deputies gave up and the Highway Patrol removed the spikes moments before the man sped through the area at 6:40 p.m.

The Highway Patrol resumed the pursuit and reached speeds of 130 mph, with the Nissan still pulling away, Haywood said.

Troopers lost the car near the Hanksville Junction, but Haywood spotted the Nissan again on Highway 24, headed south. Wayne County sheriff's deputies spiked the vehicle's tires and the car stopped three miles later.

The driver ran 100 yards from the car and hid in the sand. Troopers arrested him without incident 10 minutes later, two hours after the chase began.

The man, who was alone, said he was from California but carried a Colorado ID. He was booked into Sevier County Jail.
