Just got done installing my EGT probe finally and took some pics.
How to install an EGT probe:
First off, what is an EGT probe you ask? Its an exhaust gas temperature probe that you usually install on your exhaust manifold then hook it up to a gauge in the cabin. Basically it lets you monitor your EGTs. Why would you want to do that? To get the most power out of your car you will want to run a tad lean, the leaner your car is runinng, the hotter the EGTs will be. A lot of people use the EGT gauge to TUNE their cars, it is not a tuning device, it is a warning device. If your under WOT and you see your EGTs climbing past 1300, 1400+ you really dont want to ruin your motor and back off letting it cool down.
Tools:
-EGT Probe/Gauge. Most EGT probes are 1/8th NPT.
-1/8 27 NPT Tap
-21/64" Drill bit
-A smaller drill bit
-Drill
-Compressed air(just to push the shavings away from the bit/tap)
Placement: Most turbo people will install their EGT probe on cylinder 1 as it usually will run the hottest. I originally was going to install mine close to the head, but changed my mind and moved it slightly away from the head.
1) First thing you are going to want to is take your smaller drill bit, find out exactly where you want to place the probe, and start a small pilot hole so the bigger drill bit can start its hole smoothly. For the pilot hole, you dont have to drill all the way through the manifold, just make a small divot.
2) Next start drilling with the 21/64" bit. Dont drill all the way through quite yet, drill untill your getting close to breaking through. Once you are close, start the car and let it idle, then continue to finish drilling the hole. While idling the exhaust gas will help push the small shavings out the exhaust.
3) Once you have your hole, grab your tap and start tapping the hole. Remember to turn it a few times then back it out and get rid of the shavings that are on the tap. Continue this process untill you get threads on the entire length of the hole
4) Finally, screw in the EGT probe and make sure its tight, you dont want any exhaust gasses leaking here. Then just run the egt probe line to your gauge and your done.
A few quick tips:
-Do not use cheap taps, the cast manifolds are tough and will tear the taps up. My first tap I used was a cheap Harbor Freight tap and you could see the threads on the tap starting to wear out. I went to the hardware store and bought an Irvin tap and tap holder and it worked much better.
-Again with cheap taps you get a cheap tap holder. Using the Irvin tap holder, it tapped the hole much much easier.
